John Hickman is a writer, editor, documentary producer, and MPLS Page Contributor dedicated to preserving and sharing the stories that shape Minnesota’s cultural and natural heritage. Through his work, he explores the connections between people, place, history, and community, bringing meaningful stories to life through both written and visual media.

Over the course of his career, John has collaborated with authors, historians, conservationists, and community leaders to document the experiences, traditions, and landscapes that define the region. His passion for storytelling is rooted in the belief that every place has a story worth telling and every community has a voice worth preserving.

As a Contributor for MPLS Page, John shares thoughtful perspectives on Minnesota’s culture, history, environment, and community life, helping readers connect more deeply with the stories and issues that shape the region.

As the editor of For Love of a River: The Minnesota by acclaimed naturalist Darby Nelson, John helped bring a remarkable exploration of one of Minnesota’s most significant waterways to readers across the state and beyond. He also produced a companion documentary project that captured the inspiration and history behind the book, extending its impact and reach.

Through MN Story, John combines journalism, documentary filmmaking, historical research, and creative storytelling to highlight the people, places, and events that make Minnesota unique. His work reflects a deep appreciation for the region’s landscapes, communities, and evolving identity, while encouraging audiences to engage more deeply with the stories that surround them.

Today, John continues to create and share stories that celebrate the character of Minnesota and its people. Whether documenting a river’s legacy, preserving local history, or exploring the experiences of those who have shaped the state, his mission remains the same: to create compelling stories that inform, inspire, and foster a deeper connection between people and the places they call home.
