Jonathan Paul Carlson is an American filmmaker, journalist, and activist whose career spans more than four decades. A pioneer in documentary filmmaking and an unwavering voice for environmental and social justice, Carlson has spent his life telling stories that matter.
As the founder of EPIC Media, an independent production company based in Minneapolis, he has produced award-winning films and documentaries that explore critical issues in natural sciences, education, history, and human rights. His work bridges the gap between advocacy and art, delivering stories that inspire change and deepen public understanding.
Jon Carlson’s credits include the acclaimed prime-time documentary “River Revival: Working Together to Save the Minnesota River” (2011), and “STOP the ReRoute: Taking a Stand on Sacred Land” (2009), a powerful film centered on Native American land and environmental preservation. His projects have been commissioned or supported by prestigious institutions including Harvard University and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, and have been featured on national platforms.
Carlson spent over 20 years at WCCO Television, the CBS affiliate in Minneapolis, where he served as producer, writer, editor, and project coordinator. His tenure helped usher in nationally recognized programming in natural sciences, earning him honors from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the National Education Association, and multiple Emmy, Telly, and Dupont-Columbia awards.
Beyond production, Carlson has shared his knowledge as an educator, serving as adjunct faculty at the University of Minnesota, the College of Visual Arts, and Augsburg College, where he taught visual communications and video production. His commitment to mentorship continues through his role as Partner Emeritus at Fabré Agency, where he advises and collaborates with agency founder and protégé Jeff Fabré.
Carlson holds a B.A. in Philosophy (cum laude) from Harvard University and a Master’s in Journalism and Mass Communication from the University of Minnesota.
